Now that we know how to setup the renderer lets take a look at Camera, Lights, Environment Fog and Render Elements (formerly know as Multipass). You will find them all under V-Ray menu, this is only the beta but you will find a lot more stuff included in the final release.

PHYSICAL CAMERA

Speaking of Physical Camera everything has been reorganized, we will need to set the exposure with typical reflex Camera settings, then we can tune DOF and motion blur. Right now Focus distance needs to be set manually, but in the final release you will be able to select it interactively.
White balance can be set directly in VFB, therefore we can leave it as is.

I am obviously giving you the basic info so that you can start using the new engine right away. But if you want to go more in depth you can do anything through Physical Camera, you can structure the form of the blades so that you can create complex Bokeh effects or even chromatic aberrations like in the example below.

LIGHTS

Lights have been reorganized as well, but the settings are similar to the ones of 3.7. A big change has happened instead with managing Physical Sun/Sky.

They are now two separate objects that can be created from the lights menu. Even though parameters have been reorganized they are still similar to the past except for the new Physical Sky model, selected by default it has been improved greatly especially during dusk and blue hour.

For all the other light sources we can leave them on a neutral white if we want to modify them through Light Mix, and as we’ll see VFB2 will let us modify intensity and temperature directly in post production. Intensity can be edited in post production, but it is always best to use real values in lumens (that pairs well with a correct exposure). Through VFB2 we will be able to modify intensity, but to obtain good results and let the engine work well it is best to have a well lit scene, neither too dark nor too overexposed. This way once the render is completed you will only need to make reasonable changes and nothing too dramatic. I would like to remind you of the camera’s autoexposure that I mentioned in the previous post.

Dome light has been greatly improved, therefore if you use an .HDR render time will be similar to a physical sun/sky, therefore a lot faster than the past. The use of portal light for interiors is not necessary anymore .

ENVIRONMENT FOG

Environment Fog has been moved under Vray menu. With just a few clicks you can obtain interesting volumetric effects by just modifying the basic parameters tab. The more advanced users will have total control through the more advanced settings.

RENDER ELEMENTS

Just like everything else even the old Multipass system has been edited. Now you will find all channels under Render Elements. To activate them you will only need to drag all the needed elements to the window on the right, this way you will find them as channels in VFB. To modify the parameters of these elements you only need to click on them. Many things have been added to the Render Elements, the most interesting is Light Mix that we will talk about in the next blog posts.
