A few days ago we took advantage of some clouds to take pictures of a more “dramatic” scene compared to our initial tests with no clouds. Low sun, almost dusk, and a dull sky.

Sole basso, quasi al tramonto, e cielo cupo alle spalle.- In the meanwhile I bought some physical samples to use as references in order to calibrate correctly our HDR. The objects are  20cm. chrome sphere, 10cm. wood and glass spheres, 5cm. colored plastic empty spheres (they are slightly different now because I filled them with plaster in order to avoid SSS which was pointless right now and could cause problems. I even hand sanded other identical colored spheres with extra fine sand paper so that I could have also opaque spheres.

I modeled the geometry on cinema 4d I acquired the spheres’ colors using a spectrophotometer and used it in the diffuse channel. I recreated quite accurately the shaders (somethings still need to be improved) and I tested right away the scene with the last HDR. Here are some images as they come out of VrayforC4D (all default parameters except for the dome light subdivisions 128, and the physical camera exposure that I set the same way as the reference HDR used).

Here are some other images, a test done with a car and a couple of images using an architecture scene that I just started working on. The HDR generates also a nice secondary shadow that is created in the areas already covered by the shadow generated by the sun.
